ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on
Information and Broadcasting on Thursday recommended that no one would
be allowed to speak against Pakistan in programmes telecast by private
television channels.
It observed that words like “Pakistan will break” must not go on-air and use of such language should be completely banned.
The committee meeting was held at the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) headquarters.
Members of the NA Samina Mushtaq Pugganwala, Begum Nuzhat Sadiq, Rana Nazir Ahmed Khan, Malik Muhammad Shakeel Awan, Bushra Rehman, Mehren Anwar Raja, Chudhry Saeed Iqbal, Mahboob Ullah Jan, PEMRA Chairman Dr Abdul Jabbar and Minister for Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan also attended the meeting.
The information minister said that an effective monitoring system is in place to keep an eye on the contents being aired by private television channels.
She said around 85 channels were operating in the country while the same number of applications are pending with PEMRA for licenses.
PEMRA Chairman Dr Abdul Jabbar said that PEMRA had so far received 1076 complaints after the establishment of its complaint cell, adding that 90 per cent complaints were regarding the contents of private television channels programmes.
